Overview

The Jabra PanaCast is an intelligent video conferencing camera and speaker designed for huddle rooms and small meeting spaces. To elevate the user experience under their mission of “Making Life Sound Better”, Jabra set out to design custom UI sounds that serve a functional purpose while embodying the brand’s aesthetic.

With modern hardware becoming increasingly sophisticated, Jabra partnered with Sonic Minds to establish a strong auditory foundation – ensuring high sound quality for the PanaCast and a scalable framework for future product lines.

The challenge

Balancing function and feel

Designing UI sounds requires making interactions intuitive and informative without disrupting the user experience. Each auditory cue must align with its function so users instantly understand their actions, while volume, duration, and tone are carefully balanced to avoid annoyance during long meetings.

Furthermore, the sound palette needed to match the physical hardware. Long, rounded, and fabric-covered with a sturdy, weighted feel, the PanaCast required audio cues that resonated with its tactile design and reflected five core brand attributes: Warm & Rich, Simplicity, Premium, Professionally Playful, Technically Superior.

“At Jabra, every interaction should have a distinctive sound that seamlessly aligns with its function. By grounding the PanaCast in a unified audio identity, we allow users to instantly understand every action, making collaboration feel completely effortless.”

The solution

Bringing the five attributes to life

To translate Jabra’s five core attributes into a tangible sound design system, we developed specific acoustic techniques for each property:

Simplicity & Technically Superior: We built all sound foundations using pure sine waves. By stripping away chaotic overtones and focusing on precise single-frequency synthesis, we achieved absolute clarity and technological elegance.

Warm & Rich: We shaped the sine waves using targeted EQ filtering and saturation, boosting frequencies within the 100–500 Hz spectrum. This eliminated harsh, high-pitched “cheap” tones in favor of a deeper, velvety low-mid resonance.

Premium: We applied spatial reverb and dual-channel rhythmic delays to create a smooth, lingering decay. This adds a sense of spatial depth and acoustic luxury to every button press and system status cue.

Professionally Playful: To ensure interactions felt human rather than mechanical, we tuned all UI cues to the same musical key using clear, inviting pitch intervals, creating a harmonious and welcoming feedback loop.

Audio foundation

To give Jabra a distinct auditory signature across complex product states, we developed foundational audio sequences that communicate status transitions – such as Bluetooth pairing loops – with continuous warmth and clarity.

UI sounds

To establish coherence and facilitate functionality across the entire user experience, each UI sound was meticulously crafted to align with the same musical key and physical tactile profile, communicating with utmost clarity to the listener.

Words from client
“As a company living and breathing sound, it was a pleasure teaming up with Sonic Minds when we were going to do a redesign of the UI sounds for products ranging from our personally worn headsets to shared products such as Speak and PanaCast. Our UX team brought a deep understanding of usage contexts, and Sonic Minds caught these to create a sound identity – a sort of ‘stem flavor’ from which all UI sounds derive. Following their structured and iterative process helped us build a shared language for sound and delivered a custom sound range tailored specifically to our products.”
